This may be a touchy subject because I know how many avid Vitamin Water drinkers are out there, especially in our increasingly health-conscious (but misinformed) society. However, it's time to face the facts!
Vitamin Water gives the illusion of a healthy, hydrating, and rejuvenating miracle elixir. The bottles are beautiful, colorful, and the text on them is snappy and clever. They have empowering flavor names like "endurance," "energy," "essential," and "focus." There is no question that there is some genius marketing at hand.
However, nothing makes me cringe more than the sight of someone downing a bottle of "charge" or "balance" as though they are truly replenshing their body. The cold, hard truth is... Vitamin Water is fortified sugar water. Check the label yourself.
I went online to find the official nutrition info for Vitamin Water for this post. The Glaceau (company that owns Vitamin Water, Smart Water, and Fruit Water) website was beautiful and sleek, but of course did not offer any nutritional information. So, I found the information elsewhere after a good search. Let's take a look at "defense."

First, let me point out that this product contains NO juice. None. Now that we have that out of the way, let's factor in that one bottle of Vitamin Water is 2.5 servings, therefore, nutrional information should be adjusted accordingly (unless you're really only going to drink less than half of the bottle at at time). That makes one bottle of Vitamin Water contain 125 calories and 33 grams of sugar. (Remind me again why they try to call this a form of "water"?) That's more calories and sugar than a 12 ounce serving of Coke (12 oz of coke equates 110 calories and 30 grams of sugar). Now, Coke contains high fructose corn syrup and is not fortified, but nutritionally, you're still getting sugar and calories from both drinks.
And don't be enticed by "crystalline fructose," the second ingredient on the Vitamin Water ingredient list. It's their own fancy name for their form of sugar, and it's the most prominent ingredient after water!
The whole "vitamin" aspect of Vitamin Water is irrelevant. So, they fortify their sugar water with chemically synthesized vitamins. You can now purchase "Diet Coke Plus," which is fortified Diet Coke. Because vitamins are added to a beverage, does that make it healthy? Vitamins can't undo the sugars and additives in a beverage, and you are much better off gaining these nutrients from your diet (or a multi vitamin if necessary). Ofcourse adding vitamins to a drink doesn't do any actual harm, but it confuses consumers into thinking that the beverage is a healthy choice. Remember, these companies don't really care about your health and well-being... they're trying to win you over! Our society now has become somewhat obsessed with healthier choices, and the smart companies know how to appeal to that crowd. They boast that their drink is full of essential vitamins and will somehow make you perform your daily tasks more efficiently. Trust me on this: downing a bottle of sugar water is going to do nothing but give you a sugar crash later.
Now, Vitamin Water is not pure poison. It is certainly not a health food or something that I would personally drink, but if the choice is between Vitamin Water or soda, I suppose Vitamin Water is a wiser choice. But you know what the smartest choice is? Water. Real water. It is crucial to keep your body properly hydrated at all times, and pure water is the only way to do this. Drinks that are full with sugar only continue to dehydrate the body, regardless of their water content.
Want something sweet to drink? Try squeezing lemon or lime in pure or sparkling water. Add a few drops of stevia (see my post on this amazing natural, non-caloric sweetener) and you've got a drink that hydrates, tastes great, and isn't full of sugar or added nonsense.

I drink gallons of purified - not bottle water every day. and I throw in some Vitamin Water in Red or Yellow to give me a boost before a work out. I like its flavor better than coffee's so it's a plus for me. Of course NOTHING can replace water to detox our bodies.

5Since I don't drink soda, I like to give myself a treat every now and again and drink the Vitiamin Water. Only I drink it for the flavor, not the nutrients. I'm well aware of the sugar factor, which is why I don't drink it too often.
6Yeah, like I said, Vitamin Water is not pure poison. My biggest gripe with it is the fact that the marketing makes so many people believe it's healthy (which results in them downing bottles of the stuff on a regular basis). I am much more an advocate of the idea of "treating" yourself to some Vitamin Water (or sweet drink) rather than making it a habit.

You have not done your homework very well, vitamin water is not worse than sodas it has the type of sugar that is not metabolized the same way as HFCS is in sodas therefore does not do the same damage as regular fructose based sugar. Please do more research next time If it was so bad for you do you think that all the atheletes that have stock in the company would promote it?
9Never once did I claim that Vitamin Water is "worse" than soda; I merely compared the two. Vitamin Water is unhealthy because it is virtually just sugar and water. Sugar (ANY kind, whether it be HFCS, fructose, any type of syrup, honey, etc) is NOT beneficial to health in any way. It is devoid of any vitamins or nutrients and provides nothing but empty calories. Pure sugar causes conditions with insulin (type 2 diabetes, hypoglycemia), impaired immunity, candidiasis (bacterial overgrowth), and has been linked to a vast amount of other conditions as simple as chronic headaches, acne, allergies, depression, and food cravings. I strongly suggest reading "Get The Sugar Out" by Ann Louise Gittleman if you are interested in reading more on the topic. There are hundreds of books available on the toxic effects of sugar.
What you mentioned about athletes is irrelevant. These athletes are not certified in nutrition and plenty of doctors who are certified are still misinformed. A huge percentage of illness and death occurs yearly just from misdiagnoses made by doctors. If you want to be truly informed, you need to look beyond a single person or doctor and read books by various credible sources and compare studies yourself. Athletes are also sponsored by huge corporations that pay for studies to make health claims on their products. Even the FDA is greatly controlled by the corporations with the most money. Something as trivial as an athlete owning stock in a particular product is a far cry from a valid health claim. It's very important to think outside the box (and what the FDA spits as you for a health claim) and gain the knowledge yourself.
I hope this has made it clear that I have "done my homework."

I mention in a few comments above about how Vitamin Water's calories come only from sugar and why sugar is detrimental to health and well-being. I would constitute that as a "context" for why Vitamin Water is bad for you. Please read more carefully.
Calories fuel you, but it is the quality of the calories and the source of those calories that is important. I think anyone would know that there is a monumental difference between 100 calories of candy or 100 calories of a fresh vegetable in terms of the nutrients provided, the effect on blood sugar, and the maintenance of your cells. Just because something provides calories (and calories are necessary to live) is no reason to justify consuming it. There is very often a healthier way to get the same calories.
I don't quite understand your "cough cough" anorexic comment or the condescending way in which you are explaining how one "needs calories," but I am well aware. I don't count calories, eat 4-5 meals a day every 3-4 hours, and work out seven days a week, so I hope that wasn't an ignorant personal attack.

14Vitamin water makes a really tasty light dessert though. If you put it in the freezer for an hour it turns to grantia (a sign of all the sugar) and winds up being really really tasty. The best ones for this are energy and focus I think.

18I'd like to mention the electrolyte benefits of Vitamin Water. As a cyclist, repleneshing with electrolytes is key after a long ride (or any prolonged strenuous activity). Granted, there is quite a bit of sugar. But your body looses a ton of calories after a long ride as well, and putting a little bit back into your body doesn't hurt. I would rather drink Cytomax (better formulation) as a recovery drink, but it isn't always available. Vitamin Water IS, so I would absolutely drink it. Don't get me wrong though, I certainly won't be drinking it every day! People do need to realize Vitamin Water, or ANY sports drink, isn't meant to be consumed like fruit juices.

I totally agree with you. There is nothing more aggravating than a company using clever marketing to scam people into thinking their product is healthy. And the real problem is the fact that people are lazy. They would rather take everything for face value, instead of doing some homework themselves.
My motto is to "question everything". If you see a new product that is claiming this & that, look into it a bit further. Don't believe everything you read (especially if it is coming from an entity that is trying to make money from the product).
Nobody wants their sugar taken away from them. Vitamin Water is just a way for those who want to feel healthy to justify not drinking plain water. Plus, those bottles just look so cute when you are toting them around.

22So what? I like VitaminWater. Tap water upsets my stomach, so this is a nice alternative for picky people like me that need a little sugar to make the medicine go down. There are still vitamins in it - and it isn't as if there are people out there who rely on this stuff as their sole means of nutrition. 23I think your comparison between Coke and Vitamin Water is a little misleading.
It's not as simple as saying that Vitamin Water has more calories and sugar than Coke. Of course it's going to appear that way because you're comparing 20 fl oz. of Vitamin Water to only 12 fl oz. of Coke.
Coke actually has MORE calories and sugar by VOLUME when compared to Vitamin Water.
The Vitamin Water nutrition information lists nutrition facts for 8 fl oz. You should have compared that to the nutrition facts for an equal amount (8 fl oz.) of Coke, keeping the comparison consistent. When comparing the two products equally, you get the following results:
Coke:
27g sugar per 8 fl oz.
97 calories per 8 fl oz.
Vitamin Water:
2413g sugar per 8 fl oz.
50 calories per 8 fl oz.
(cracking knuckles) OK kids, here's the thing. It's bad for you. Deal with it, as much as you want to try to defend your precious vitamin water, it's the truth. It's not just this post, it's been all over the news, and exploited on many talk shows, magazine articles etc. It's proven, it's not healthy and the vitamins contained are hydrolyzed, which in layman's terms litarally means.....you just end up fortifying your urine with vitamins and just pee them right out. Your body doesn't absorb much if any actual "vitamins".

First off, Glaceau, the company that makes Vitamin Water DOES also make a product called Fruit Water. Second, it is important to understand that the "crystalline fructose" listed as an ingredient comes from cornstarch, not fruit.
Rymo: I would love to meet the one person in the world that actually pours out a "serving size" of vitamin water. Fact is, most people do not read the labels let alone care about the serving sizes. (Most people) just chug the stuff. People I know can kill a bottle in one sitting easy. So what she is saying is true for most Americans. The sad fact is, if they made vitamin water in the actual serving size, greedy Americans wouldn't buy it. We always want the king size, and we end up eating/ drinking the king size all to ourselves. Look at energy drinks, first there was Red Bull (which is small) a serving size.....then came Rockstar! "twice the energy, bigger, better, faster! Party like a rockstar!" There is almost 3 servings in a Rockstar and kids still chug the whole thing!

The whole point she is trying to make is not "ohhhh, it's bad, never drink it ever!!" She is just exposing the way we are fooled by advertising and celebrities, and sweet treats are fine .......in moderation.
25RazorBladeBarbie: If you read the nutrition information listed on almost ANY beverage out there (not just Vitamin Water), you'll notice that they list the nutrition facts for only 8 fl oz. of product, not the entire bottle. The serving sizes are broken down this way, NOT to make the drink seem more "healthy", but so that there can be a standardized unit of comparison, a uniform guideline, so that accurate comparisons can be made from product to product. If they didn't do it this way, it'd be pretty difficult to compare products without having to constantly do unit conversions all the time.
It's like comparing a 2 liter bottle of Coke to a 12 oz. can of Pepsi and saying that, since the 2 liter of Coke has more sugar in it than the can of Pepsi, than Pepsi must be better for you than Coke. It doesn't work that way.
I wasn't trying to say that Vitamin Water is good for you by any means, I was just stating that, for arguments sake, it's better to compare products equally and accurately before presenting your case.
26An e-mail I received today said Vitamin Water was the cause of a 49 year old, healthy womans death in Tierra Amarilla, NM. The investigation found it contains something used in anti freeze. She was apparantly using the vitamin water to hydrate and thought it was healthy. Has anyone heard this story yet???
27Yeah I recieved that chain mail also about the woman who supposedly died because of the ingredient in the vitamin water but hold on now, I did my homework. First of all as an avid drinker and supporter of vitamin water I was shocked when I read the e-mail so I decided to investigate a little bit and I found an article from a New Mexico newspaper stating that the woman does in fact exist and that yes she passed away over the weekend, but the article also states that her brother, a policeman, did an investigation and he denies the claims that they found anything in her system or the vitamin water. Oh and by the way the woman was definitely not healthy at the time of her death, she had a stomach flu for weeks and instead of getting it checked out she drank the vitamin water to keep hydrated since she couldn't hold down her meals.
28I think that Vitamin Water is not as harmful as a lot of people say. I drink it quite frequently and I am completely fine. I do believe that people should start doing a little more research before jumping to conclusions and inventing rumors like the woman in Tierra Amarilla. Don't you think if it was harmful they would just stop selling it?

32I don't see what the big fuss is about, as an athlete I'm a supporter of vitamin water it gives me energy during a workout and I've been drinking it for a few years now and I've only gotten positive results.

37vitaminwater isn't as deceiving as you think, but hey in about a month you won't have anything negative to say because they're coming out with a 10 calorie per serving version. But then I guess you'll find something to complain about like using an artificial sweetener or something to that effect. oh wait... you won't be able to, because it contains stevia! I have a friend that works for them and I was a skeptic like you at first, but after I had the opportunity to try the 10 calorie, naturally sweetened version (as is the regular version) I began to realize that they have the goal of the consumer in mind and what they want. Maybe after you try it you won't be so quick to jump the gun.
38While I agree with most everything in this article, I still think there is substantial reason to choose Vitamin Water over a soda or something similar. If you're going to drink something with flavor and some sugar (which believe me - there is no stopping some people), I think that of all the beverages out there Vitamin Water is a good choice. The point is, I know some people who will drink two 20 oz sodas a day and are getting virtually no benefit whatsoever. At least when you're drinking Vitamin Waters you are getting some benefit out of it and they taste much better than soda. I also agree with the above post that the new "VitaminWater10" is impressive - only about 25 calories and 7 sugars per bottle. And no, it's not loaded with classic artificial sweeteners that will rot your stomach, or worse.
39I just came upon this after reading today that Coca-Cola actually owns vitamin water, as well as smart water etc. In fact many mega soft drink companies own a lot of so called "health food"/"organic" products.
40Anyways, first off I must agree with the author on most of her points, vitamin water isn't poison but should be drank in moderation, furthermore any athletes that have lent their names or images for vitamin water SHOULD NOT be considered a reason to drink this or anything like. I must disagree however with the idea that sugar is bad for you. Not so, seeing how sugar is a carbohydrate. In fact carbohydrate is another word for simple sugars and complex sugars. Simple sugars, such as glucose, are easily and quickly digested by the body and transformed into energy. So no sugar at all is stupid. But you shouldn't over do sugar. If overdone, sugar is stored as fat.

I do not drink cokes beer liqour or sugar added drinks.There was a post in this stating the differnce in sugar and HFCS.I wanted to add that there is a difference.In soda, it has been found that by using HFCS instead of pure sugar it can make the soda 10 times richer in harmful carbonyl compounds. According to one study, carbonyl compounds are elevated in people with diabetes and are blamed for causing diabetic complications such as foot ulcers and eye and nerve damage. Also I've seen multiple posts about the calories.There are 25 calories in a full bottle of vitamin water.10 calories a serving(8 fl. oz=1 serving) in a 20 oz bottle is very good. And also I don't know if anyone else knows this but you need calories for your muscles to use and carbohydrates to break into sugars that the body can use to function. Yes, too many calories a day can cause disfucntion itself,but 25 calories a drink is pretty good.One more thing about this drink that people think doesn't give you nutrients-it does.It is packed with electrolytes and if you want to avoid infection you need them.And again they also let your cell membranes communicate with each other in your brain.If you had no electric charge in the brain you would be a "vegtable".

Companies are allowed to put vitamin amounts on the bottle if it was put in, but they don't tell you that the product is then heat filled. Pasteurization kills!
